Smart sensors and modern automotive electronics

Modern automotive electronics has entered a new phase of substantial improvement, from the electronic components used to the architecture of in-vehicle electronic systems. One of the most representative core components is the smart sensor. In recent years, my country's automotive industry has experienced rapid growth and impressive development momentum. This has led some experts to predict that the automotive industry could surpass the IT industry to become one of the most important pillars of China's national economy. In fact, the growth of the automotive industry will inevitably include the growth of the IT industry, which is closely related to the automotive industry. For example, while the value of electronic products and technologies in FAW's products currently only accounts for around 10%-15%, the average value of electronic products and technologies in foreign vehicles is approximately 22%. In mid-range and high-end sedans, automotive electronics already account for over 30%, and this proportion continues to grow rapidly, expected to soon reach 50%.

Electronic information technology has become a dominant factor in the development of the next generation of automobiles. Improvements in every aspect of a vehicle's power, handling, safety, and comfort, among other aspects, will rely on the perfect integration of mechanical systems and structures with electronic products and information technology. Automotive engineering experts point out that the development of electronic technology has profoundly changed the very concept of automotive products. This is one reason why the electronics industry has recently shown unprecedented interest in automotive electronics.

However, it must be pointed out that, with the exception of some in-car electronic equipment, such as audio and video equipment, in-car communications and navigation systems, and onboard office and network systems, which have undergone relatively minor changes, modern automotive electronics have entered a new stage of substantial advancement, from the electronic components used (including sensors, actuators, microcircuits, etc.) to the architecture of in-car electronic systems. One of the most representative core components is the smart sensor (smart actuator, smart transmitter).

In reality, automotive electronics have evolved through several stages: from circuit monitoring and control built with discrete electronic components, to independent, dedicated, semi-automatic, and even automatic control systems constructed using electronic components or assemblies plus microprocessors, to a new stage where high-speed buses (at least five types of buses have been developed and implemented) are used to unify data exchange among various electronic devices and systems in the vehicle, enabling integrated, intelligent control. These new automotive electronics systems are composed of individual electronic control units (ECUs), which can be independently controlled while also being coordinated for optimal overall operation.
